Don't like the way silver fillings look? You may be interested in tooth-colored fillings. Our Sherman, TX, cosmetic dentist, Dr. Julie Folger, fillingsshares some advantages of the fillings.

What are tooth-colored fillings?

Tooth-colored fillings don't use a metal mixture to fill the cavity in your tooth, but instead, seal the space with composite resin. Composite resin is composed of plastic and glass powder and is also used to bond teeth. The flexible composite resin is applied to your tooth layer by layer, then each layer is hardened with a curing light in our Sherman office.

What are the benefits of composite resin fillings?

Tooth-colored fillings offer these benefits:

  • More Natural Appearance: If you would like to keep your dental history between you and your dentist, you may want to consider a tooth-colored filling. Composite resin is produced in the most common tooth shades to ensure that the filling doesn't stand out.
  • No Expansion and Contraction: Every time you eat or drink something hot or cold, the metals in a silver amalgam filling expand or contract. Eventually, the effects of expansion and contraction may crack your tooth. Cracked teeth are at increased risk of breaking if they're not protected with a dental crown. Tooth-colored fillings don't expand or contract, which reduces your risk of a tooth fracture.
  • A Stronger Tooth: Composite resin bonds to your tooth, which keeps it strong and helps protect if from breaking. When you choose a tooth-colored filling, a smaller area of healthy tooth structure will need to be removed to place the filling. Keeping as much of your healthy tooth structure intact as possible also helps protect your teeth from breaking.
  • A Mercury-Free Option: Silver amalgam fillings contain several metals, including mercury. Several years ago, researchers were concerned that mercury in fillings might be toxic. Despite assurances from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that mercury fillings are safe when used in people who are older than six, some people prefer to avoid amalgam fillings and opt for tooth-colored fillings instead.

Tooth-colored fillings enhance your smile and help keep your teeth strong. If you're concerned about a toothache, or it's been six months since your last visit, call Sherman, TX, cosmetic dentist, Dr. Folger, at (903) 893-2540 to schedule an appointment.
